Introductory Tenancies

Islington will offer introductory tenancies to all new Islington council tenants for the first year. This could be extended if any of the tenancy conditions are broken and the council can also take actiion to repossess the property. If there are no problems with the tenancy, the introductory tenancy will automatically become a secure tenancy at the end of the year. This does not affect existing Islington council tenants, who will be offered secure tenancies. Housing associations have their own criteria for deciding how many people should live in a property.

If you have been short listed to view a Housing Association or Co-Op property your details will be passed to them and they will contact short listed applicants direct.

g and Council Tax Benefit

From April 2013 the government is cutting the amount of housing benefit you will get if you are a social housing tenant and you have a spare bedroom. This will only apply to people of working age, so if you are old enought to receive state pensions this change will not affect you.  If you have one psare bedroom the cut will be equal to 14% of your rent, if you have two or more spare bedrooms, the cut will be equal to 25% of the rent for your property.
